Texas on Top of List for Childhood Hunger! Here’s how to help!

You’ve heard me talk a lot about Child Hunger over the past several months and I wanted to give you an update.

First, Courtney held a church fundraiser and asked her “Go-Group” to donate items for a garage sale. She held the garage sale on the same weekend at the subdivision garage sale and had tons of traffic! All proceeds from her garage sale went to the End Child Hunger with Conagra. Many shopping the sale inquired about the End Child Hunger signs and were grateful for the coupons. It was a huge success! Who doesn’t want to get rid of stuff, and this was a great way for her to pay it forward with Conagra!

I wanted to thank all of you who have personally emailed me about a rally you are holding. It means a lot that simple acts can make a huge difference in our own communities! THANK YOU!

Recent studies show just how dire the need is in our state:

Child Hunger State Statistics – Feeding America released its latest state-level data on child hunger rates. Arkansas, Texas and Arizona have the highest rates of child food insecurity in the country at nearly 25 percent.

Child Food Insecurity in the United States: 2006-2008 was funded by the ConAgra Foods Foundation, Feeding America’s exclusive Leadership Partner in the Fight to End Child Hunger. In addition, the study includes regional data on food insecurity for children under the age of 5. In the South, more than one in five children or nearly 22 percent of young children are food insecure – the highest rate in the nation. The Western region of the country has the second highest rate of young child food insecurity at nearly one in five, or 19.6 percent. The Midwest has a rate of more than one in six, or 18.6 percent; and the Northeast has a rate of nearly one in seven, or 13.7 percent.

Here’s how you can become involved:

· Check out the BackPack Challenge – a week-long challenge to cook and eat from a typical bag of food that someone might get from a food pantry. Whether it’s for a full week or just a weekend, this could be an interesting challenge to issue to your readers, if you’re still brainstorming post ideas for the summer.
